As a distinguished role model to Africans in general and Ethiopians everywhere in particular, in recognition of his inspiring athletic excellence which has brought pride, fame and prestige to Ethiopia and its people, for helping preserve Ethiopia’s positive image in the world stage over the last 5 decades and counting, in appreciation of the rich and positive contribution he has made both as an athlete and as a military person willing to die for his nation, for exemplifying the highest ideals and standards of our Ethiopian and the world community, for his love of country, and for all of his distinctive endearing qualities.

Major Onni Niskanen: (posthumously)

As a distinguished coach of the legendary athletes, Abebe Bikila, Mamo Wolde and others who up-lifted Ethiopia to the world stage, as one of the founders of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society, as an influential leader who helped in the establishment of the Ethiopian-Swedish Building college-now College of Technology in Addis Ababa, as a humanitarian who served Save the Children Foundation in Ethiopia, as a venerated teacher, in recognition of his inspiring work in the modernization process in Ethiopia, for his unforgettable 38 years of community service in Ethiopia and demonstrated love of country and for all of his distinctive positive attributes.
