Born in Ethiopia in 1922 E.C., Melake Genet Lissanework Woubu, completed his primary education and spiritual training in the province of Gondor. He then received his higher education in Greece at Chalks Theological College. Following his schooling in Greece, he taught Christian Orthodox Theology at the World Council of Churches in Geneva, Switzerland and received certification of recognition for his work and accomplishments.
He is fluent in Amharic, Ge-ez, English, Latin, and Greek languages. From 1961 to 1975 he served under Abuna Atnateos in the Orthodox Church in New York City. In 1975 he was ordained to priesthood by Abuna Teoflos while serving at the Mariam Tsion Orthodox Church. During his stay in New York, he had also served as a teacher of African Studies at a public school in the fourth district. In 1977 he was elevated to the position he now holds, Melake Genet. He is loved and venerated by the Ethiopian community. Melake Genet Lissanework has also served the Jamaican as well as the Ethiopian community in New York until 1983. After 1983 he then moved to Washington D.C. to serve a larger community of Ethiopians. To this day he is serving the young and the old alike with dignity, grace, and modesty. He is loved and revered by an untold number of Ethiopians, Jamaicans, and African-Americans he has been serving for over 40 years.
