Mahlet attended Annandale High School and was in the all-honors, international baccalaureate Program. Her academic record of courses is quite amazing. As early as ninth grade she was already taking courses like Honors English, Honors Biology, Hon ors Geometry, and French 2. Mahlet is a leader by every measure. She was the President of the Black Cultural Awareness Student Association, Vice President and Secretary of the Symphonic Orchestra, Treasurer of Student Government, and one of four student representatives to the Fairfax County School Board.
She is a member of the Math Honors Society and Math team. She speaks Amharic, French, Spanish, and Russian and is a member of the French Honors Society. She has also received numerous awards. She was selected to participate in a state-wide competition for the Governor School Summer Russian Language Academy. She was the 2003 National Venture Scholar, the recipient of the All American Scholar Award as well as the Xerox Corporation Heritage Writing Contest award and the Science Fair Award. She was the 1st place winner of the Black History Bowl and 1st place winner of the Jack & Jill of America Black History Regional competition, and the recipient of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education, which was awarded to her by the University of Cambridge in England. Not only has Mahlet focused her time, which she does, but she also has made time to help the homeless and raise society’s awareness of the need to help those who are unable help themselves. Since 2001, Mahlet has participated in the Walk for the Homeless and she has raised funds for the “Homeless Women and Children Dinner Program.” At the Foggy Bottom Food Pantry, Mahlet packaged and distributed groceries for low-income DC residents and the homeless. She also tutors at Weyanoke Elementary School and serves as program coordinator of the program. With all of this she is also a cheerleader and a member of the Varsity Dance Team. |
