ImageDr. Sereke-Brhan, a rising star in our community, received her Ph.D. in African History from Michigan State University. Dr. Sereke-Brhan, known to her friends as just Heran, is the first Ethiopian woman to receive a Ph.D. in History. Heran is being recognized by SEED not only for her academic excellence, sterling and exemplary character, but also for her tireless efforts to promote a positive image of Ethiopia and Ethiopians. The exhibition entitled “Ethiopian Passage: Dialogue in the Diaspora” shown at the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institute (May - October 2003), was partially conceived by Dr. Heran Sereke-Brhan. Heran has helped in promoting the works of Ethiopian artists and authors, thereby advancing the interests and positive images of the Ethiopians in the Diaspora community as well as educating our children in knowing and appreciating their heritage. Among the many works of Ethiopians in the Diaspora that Heran helped promote, personally introduce and discuss with the public were films by Ethiopian filmmakers Haile Gerima, Salem Mekuria, Ermias Wolde-Amlak and Professor Abiye Ford. She helped plan educational programs for children that included readings of Ethiopian folktales. Poet Laureate Tsegaye Gabre Medhin celebrated his birthday by sharing anecdotes of his life at a memorable poetry reading held in his honor at the Smithsonian. These programs were appreciated by the public, parents and children and would not have been possible without the relentless efforts of Dr. Heran.
